Zum ersten Mal wird hier die Bedeutung des österreichischen Diplomaten Anton Prokesch-Osten als Beobachter und Schilderer des zeitgenössischen Orients untersucht. Der Biographie folgt eine ausführliche Zusammenstellung der antiken und neuzeitlichen Quellen, die Anton Prokesch-Osten für seine Beschreibungen heranzog. Das dritte Kapitel bildet eine Darstellung seiner Reisen in chronologischer Abfolge. Anhand ausgewählter Beispiele wird die Umsetzung der vielfältigen Eindrücke in die literarischen Formen des Briefes, des Tagebuches und der zum Druck bestimmten, ausgearbeiteten Reisebeschreibung dargestellt. Der letzte Teil der Arbeit gibt eine Charakteristik der Persönlichkeit und des Wirkens Anton Prokesch-Ostens als Schriftsteller. Das Literaturverzeichnis bietet erstmals eine Zusammenstellung der bisher weitestgehend noch unerschlossenen, in Archiven und Bibliotheken aufbewahrten Handschriften.
