Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt anhand der Untersuchung einer Auswahl von Frauengestalten in Cechovs Werken von 1886 bis 1903 die fundamentale Bedeutung der Frau in der Weltanschauung dieses Autors. Hierbei werden Grundprobleme weiblicher Existenz deutlich, die auch in unserer heutigen Zeit noch Aktualitat besitzen. Cechov zeigt die Frau auf der Suche nach ihrer Identitat und thematisiert die Fragwurdigkeit des traditionellen Frauenbildes in Literatur und Gesellschaft. Die Auseinandersetzung Cechovs mit der Frauendarstellung bei anderen russischen Autoren des 19. Jahrhunderts, insbesondere bei L.N. Tolstoj und I.S. Turgenev, bildet einen Schwerpunkt der Untersuchung."
