Die langfristige Performance deutscher Aktien ist keine rein wirtschaftshistorische Fragestellung. Die erzielbare Rendite hat auch erheblichen Einfluß auf die aktuelle Praxis der Unternehmensbewertung und auf interne Renditevorgaben. Dennoch wurde die Entwicklung bisher noch nicht mit einem konsistenten Indexkonzept bis ins 19. Jahrhundert zurückverfolgt. Der Autor konstruiert einen wöchentlichen Performanceindex aus 30 Standardwerten von der Gründerzeit bis Ende 1959. Historische Handelsbräuche und Sonderfaktoren (Börsenschließungen, Währungsumstellungen, Stoppkurse, alliierte Zerschlagungen) werden aus der Sicht eines Anlegers berücksichtigt. Die Indexermittlung erfolgt konsequent über sämtliche strukturelle Brüche hinweg. Der erstellte Index wird durch konsistente Verknüpfung bis in die jüngste Zeit fortgeschrieben.
