Der Epitaphios war der feierliche Höhepunkt der Bestattungszeremonie, die zu Ehren der Gefallenen am Ende jedes Kriegsjahres in Athen stattfand. Ein vom Volk gewählter Redner hielt diese Bestattungsrede, die im 5. Jahrhundert eingeführt wurde. Geprägt wurde das Genre Epitaphios durch den rituellen Rahmen der Bestattung wie die politischen Wertvorstellungen der Athener. Die Arbeit bietet eine umfassende Gattungsbestimmung dieser Reden, welche die Zwänge der Bestattungszeremonie und die politischen Sinnstiftungen der Athener gleichermaßen berücksichtigt. Die Methodik der Formgeschichte, Arnold van Genneps Schema zur Klassifikation von Riten sowie die Sprechakt-Theorie John L. Austins haben sich hierbei als besonders fruchtbar erwiesen. Der Textbestand der Epitaphien ließ sich somit neu bewerten, die Internstruktur der Epitaphien und die Leistung des einzelnen Redners waren dadurch klarer zu bestimmen. Die Sinnstiftungen der Epitaphien gewähren Einblick in die mentale Infrastruktur der Athener. In begrenztem Umfang ist diese Arbeit zugleich eine Studie zum Verhältnis von Politik und Religion.
