Die chinesische Literatur kann im 20. Jahrhundert dank der Wandlung Chinas zum Nationalstaat die Isolation überwinden und in den Dialog mit der Weltliteratur eintreten. Keine andere Epoche ist deshalb so gut dokumentiert, wissenschaftlich aufgearbeitet und durch Übersetzungen erschlossen. Dabei lassen sich mehrere deutlich ausgeprägte Phasen unterscheiden: Am Anfang steht die Orientierung an der westlichen Moderne, wodurch sich in den dreißiger Jahren eine eigenständige, innovative Literatur entfalten kann. Diese Entwicklung endet mit der Proklamation der Volksrepublik China. Bis zum Ende der Kulturrevolution liegt die Literatur im engen Korsett des "sozialistischen Realismus". Erst in den achtziger Jahren breiten sich langsam wieder neue Tendenzen aus. Gegen Ende des Jahrhunderts bestimmt die Hinwendung zur Marktwirtschaft auch das literarische Leben. Die teilweise unterschiedlich verlaufenden Entwicklungen der chinesischen Literatur auf Taiwan, in Hongkong und Macau werden in diesem Band ebenfalls eingehend dokumentiert. Ein umfassendes Literaturverzeichnis regt zur vertiefenden Lektüre an, der ausführliche Index erleichtert die Suche nach Autoren und Werken.
