Die hier vorliegende erste grosse wissenschaftliche Auslegung des 1. Timotheusbriefes in deutscher Sprache seit mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten setzt diese Forschungssituation voraus. Sie versteht die Pastoralbirefe als ein Schirftencorpus der dritten christlichen Generation, das Paulus in einer veranderten Situation neu zum Sprechen bringen und ihn so der Kirche als verbindlichen apostolischen Lehrer erhalten will. Dabei wird deutlich, dass diese Briefe ein wichtiges Stuck der fruhen Wirkungsgeschichte der paulinischen Theologie sind, durch das die spatere kirchliche Paulusrezeption weitgehend gepragt wurde. Die ausfuhrlichen traditionsgeschichtlichen Analysen weisen detailliert nach, welche paulinischen Texte und Themen der Verfasser - ein Mitglied der kleinasiatischen Paulusschule um die Wende vom 1. zum 2. Jahrhundert - aufgenommen und in welcher Richtung er neue interpretatorische Akzente gesetzt hat. Damit gewinnt der 1. Timotheusbrief eine uberraschende Aktualitat. Er will von der paulinischen Tradition her Antworten auf Fragen geben, die die Kirche seither immer wider beschaftigt haben udn die fur uns heute besonders brennend geworden sind: Wie kann die Kirche in veranderten Situationen die Identitat mit ihrem apostolischen Ursprung wahren? Wie soll sie ihren Auftrag gegenuber einer nichtchristlichen Gesellschaft und deren Lebensformen bestimmen? Besonders eindringlich behandelt J. Roloff die Probleme des Amtsverstandnisses und der Ordination. Er will damit einen Beitrag zu einem der kritischsten Punkte der gegenwartigen okumenischen Diskussion leisten.
