Im ersten Teil des Buches entwickelt Ota Sik eine Theorie der kurzfristigen Zyklen der Wirtschaft und diskutiert die unterschiedlichen Bedingungen der konjunkturellen wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung. Im zweiten Teil von R. Höltschi und C. Rockstroh wird die langfristige Entwicklung der Schweiz, der Bundesrepublik und der USA seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg empirisch analysiert. Anhand eines breiten theoretischen Ansatzes wird ein allgemeines Muster der langfristigen wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung erarbeitet. Die Autoren zeigen in umfassender Weise die Charakteristika der kurzfristigen und langfristigen wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung und diskutieren die Zusammenhänge zwischen diesen beiden zeitlichen Perspektiven. Sie weisen dabei auf die historische und institutionelle Begrenztheit ökonomischer Theorien hin und stellen sich selbst in die - im deutschen Sprachraum wenig bekannte - Tradition der amerikanischen unorthodoxen bzw. institutionellen Ökonomie. Sie ziehen insbesondere auch technologische und gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen zur Erklärung des wirtschaftlichen Wachstums heran.
