In den letzten Jahrzehnten hat man auf vie len Gebieten der Grundlagenforschung und in angewandten Disziplinen der Biolo gie der Mikroorganismen steigende Beachtung geschenkt. An Mikroorganismen als relativ einfach gebauten, lebendigen Syste men mit kurzer Generationsdauer und hoher Reproduktionslei stung wurden grundsatzliche Erkenntnisse auf biochemischem, molekularbiologischem und genetischem Gebiet gewonnen. Mikro organismen sind auch industriell bedeutsame Stoffproduzenten geworden, mit deren Hilfe Antibiotica und andere pharmazeu tisch wichtige Stoffe sowie in der Lebensmittelindustrie ver wendete SUbstanzen wie z. B. Glutaminsaure, Citronensaure, Essigsaure, Athanol und viele Enzyme produziert werden. Unter suchungen liber den Stoffumsatz in der Natur und den Abbau von Abfallprodukten der Zivilisation konnen an den Mikroorganismen nicht vorlibergehen und haben taxonomische, biochemische und populationsdynamische Arbeiten angeregt. Mikroorganismen wer den vielfach auch als Modellsysteme flir die Untersuchung von Entwicklungs- und Differenzierungsprozessen eingesetzt. Es ist daher notwendig, daB die Mikrobiologie im naturwissen schaftlichen Unterricht der Gymnasien und Hochschulen eine gebtihrende Berlicksichtigung findet. Das vorliegende Buch solI allen helfen, die sich mit den Ob jekten, Problemen und Methoden der Mikrobiologie vertraut ma chen wollen. Es ist in Anlehnung an die im Rahmen des Biolo giestudiums an der Universitat Freiburg i. Br. durchgeflihrten mikrobiologischen Praktika entstanden, und es enthalt sowohl Versuche flir einen halbtagigen Anfangerkurs als auch flir ein ganztagiges Fortgeschrittenenpraktikum. Selbstverstandlich konnten aber nicht aIle Gebiete der Mikrobiologie Berlicksich tigung finden. Obwohl Aspekte und Methoden der Biochemie, Genetik, Immunbiologie und Medizinischen Mikrobiologie inte griert wurden, kann und solI der Text nicht Praktikumsvorschrif ten der genannten Disziplinen ersetzen.
