Als celluläre Autophagie bezeichnet man einen Vorgang, bei dem innerhalb einer Zelle umschriebene Portionen des Cytoplasmas durch Membranen abge grenzt und damit in ein eigenes Kompartiment verlagert werden, in welchem dann das segregierte Material intracellulär verdaut, also in kleinere Einheiten aufgespalten wird. Der Terminus Autophagie wurde auf der cellulären Ebene erstmals von Brachet (1961) im Zusammenhang mit Stoffwechselumstellungen bei enucleier ten Amöben verwandt. Von morphologischen Befunden ausgehend hatte aber schon vorher Altmann (1956) die Konzeption entwickelt, daß Anteile des Cyto plasmas unter den Erscheinungen der umschriebenen Coagulation ausgegliedert und abgebaut werden können. Elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen (Hru ban et a1., 1962; Ashford u. Porter, 1962) und die Integration solcher Phäno mene in das Lysosomenkonzept (Novikoff u. Essner, 1962; de Duve, 1963a, b; Ericsson et a1. , 1965; de Duve u. Wattiaux, 1966) haben diese Vorstellung bestätigt und eine Fülle von Keimtnissen zutage gefördert, die zuletzt von Ericsson (1969c) zusammenfassend dargestellt worden sind.
