Druckluft wird auf einfache Weise durch Luftverdichtung aus der Atmosphare gewonnen. Dennoch ist sie wohl mit die teuerste Energieart, die heute in der Technik verwendet wird. Wenn die Druckluft aus dem betrieblichen Alltag nicht mehr wegzudenken ist, dann deutet das bereits darauf hin, daB sie fiir bestimmte Einsatzgebiete iiberlegen oder sogar unentbehrlich ist. Die Anwendung der Druckluft kann bis zur Zeitwende zuriickverfolgt werden. Urn so erstaunlicher ist die Tatsache, daB die Entwicklung der Druckluftwerkzeuge in Deutschland erst urn die Jahrhundertwende ihren Aufschwung nahm. Bei den zu diesem Zeitpunkt entwickelten Werk zeugen handelte es sich in der Mehrzahl urn Konstruktionen aus der Gruppe der schlagenden Werkzeuge. Umlaufende Werkzeuge wurden bis in die dreiBiger Jahre lediglich als Handbohrer gebaut. Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg wurden innerhalb Deutschlands in standig steigender Zahl Druckluftwerkzeuge in Fertigungsbetrieben ein gesetzt. Der AnstoB hierzu wurde von den Werkzeugherstellern in den USA und in England gegeben. Beide Lander hatten bereits einige Jahre friiher erkannt, daB Fertigungskosten durch den Einsatz von Druck luftwerkzeugen erheblich gesenkt werden konnen. Aus dieser Zeit stammt der in den USA fiir Druckluftwerkzeuge gepragte Sammel begriff "pneumatischer Muskel".
