Description
Molecularbiologyhasuntilnowmainlyfocussedonindividualmolecules,on theirpropertiesasisolatedentitiesorascomplexesinverysimplemodelsystems. However,biologicalmoleculesinlivingsystemsparticipateinverycomplexn- works,includingregulatorynetworksforgeneexpression,intracellularmetabolic networksandbothintra-andintercellularcommunicationnetworks. Suchn- worksareinvolvedinthemaintenance(homeostasis)aswellasthedi?erentiation ofcellularsystemsofwhichwehaveaveryincompleteunderstanding. Nevertheless,theprogressinmolecularbiologyhasmadepossiblethedetailed descriptionofthecomponentsthatconstitutelivingsystems,notablygenesand proteins.
