Der Umbau des ostdeutschen Universitätssystems seit 1989 reduziert sich nicht, wie häufig behauptet, auf die Kopie der westdeutschen Institutionen, sondern setzte ein spezifisches Reformpotential frei. Der Band lokalisiert dieses Potential im Gesamtbild des bundesdeutschen Universitätssystems und konzentriert sich dabei auf die Neugründungen in Ostdeutschland (Frankfurt/Oder, Cottbus, Erfurt), aber auch auf die Umbruchsituation der wichtigsten Traditionsuniversitäten (Humboldt-Universität, Leipzig, Chemnitz). Die dabei sich zeigenden Ambivalenzen werden als Aufforderung zu einer energischen Fortsetzung der Universitätsreform gedeutet.
