Die Probleme del' automatischen Steuerung technischer Systeme mit ProzeBrechnern haben in den letzten Jahren immer mehr an Bedeutung gewonnen. VOl' allem in del' chemischen Industrie ist dabei die Untersuchung des Stabilitatsverhaltens del' Steuerungssysteme unumgang lich. Die mathematischen Modelle solcher Systeme sind in del' Regel von hoher Dimension und stark nichtlinear. Die Stabilitatsuntersuchungen haben nicht nul' die Frage zu beantworten, ob ein System stabil ist oder nicht, es ist dariiber hinaus del' Einzugsbereich des stabilen Zustandes moglichst gut abzuschatzen. Die Losung del' dahei anftretenden Probleme ist ohne die Anwendung del' zweiten oder direkten Methode von LJAPUNOW undenkhar. Die gl'undlegende Arbeit von LJAPUNOW [22] aus dem Jahre 1893, die 1907 in franzo sischer Dbersetzung erschien, fand zunachst wenig Beachtung. Erst in den dreiBiger Jahren wurden die LJAPuNowschen Gedanken zunachst von sowjetischen Wissenschaftlern, dann abel' auch international in vel' starktem MaBe wieder aufgegriffen, weiterentwickelt und verallgemeinert. Die standig wachsende Zahl von Ver offentlichungen, die nicht nul' die Weitel'entwicklung del' Theorie, sondern sehr stark auch die praktischen Anwen dungen betreffen, iRt in zwischen Imum noch zu ilber schauen.
