Die Fahrzeugindustrie gehört zu den Branchen, die sich in der Produktentwicklung auf Rechen- und Simulationsverfahren abstützen. Ursache dafür ist, daß es die scharfe Konkurrenzsituation auf dem Automobilmarkt erfordert, für den Kunden optimale Produkte zu entwickeln bei einem Minimum an Kosten. War in der Vergangenheit die Methode "trial und error" vorherrschend, d. h. die Produkt optimierung erfolgte auf experimentellem Weg mittels aufwendiger Versuche, so muß heute die Entwicklung des Fahrzeuges im wesentlichen abgeschlossen sein, bevor die ersten Prototypen gebaut sind. Die damit durchgeführten Tests dürfen dann nur mehr der endgültigen Abnahme dienen. Eine ähnliche Situation zeigt der Flugzeugbau - wenn auch infolge etwas anderer Voraussetzungen. So ist es kein Zufall, daß gerade diese beiden Industriezweige die stärksten Impulse zur Entwicklung von Simulationsverfahren gesetzt haben. Wie durch den Flugzeugbau z. B. der Einsatz der Finite-Elemente-Methode vorangetrieben wurde, so entstanden durch den Fahrzeugbau Lösungswege zur Berechnung von Strukturen unter Berücksichtigung von nichtlinearen Effekten; möglich wurde u. a. die theoretische Erfassung von komplexen Strömungsproblemen und Schwingungsaufgaben. Bei der Entwicklung eines Fahrzeuges sind die unterschiedlichsten physikalischen Phänomene zu berücksichtigen. Die Beiträge dieser Tagung geben einen Querschnitt darüber, welche Probleme heute durch Rechenverfahren behandelt werden, und wie diese im täglichen Entwicklungsablauf eingesetzt werden.
