By applying the term 'theologically conservative', he explores a fruitful approach in the study of this movement. Insbesondere der Blick auf theologische Auseinandersetzungen des 19. Jahrhunderts liefert erstaunliche theologische und strukturelle Parallelen. Was waren die theologischen Anliegen der "theologisch konservativen" Bewegungen beider Jahrhunderte und wie lassen sich diese systematisieren? Breitschwerdt verdeutlicht, dass die evangelikale Bewegung besser im Kontext einer "theologisch konservativen" Bewegung zu verstehen ist, die sich wahrend des 18. Jahrhunderts im Gegenuber zu einer vor allem durch die Entwicklung der historisch-kritischen Methode hervorgetretenen "modernen Theologie" gebildet hat. Als isoliertes Phanomen des 20. Jahrhunderts kann die evangelikale Bewegung daher nicht gesehen werden. Die Studie tragt dazu bei, den Konservativismus-Begriff aus der Profangeschichte (Valjavec, Epstein, Kondylis) fur die Kirchengeschichte fruchtbar zu machen und einer immer mehr zu beobachtenden Begriffsverwirrung zu begegnen.
