Against the background of the controversy surrounding the necessity of good works (Majorist Struggle, our edition, Vol. 3), broader questions broke out. At the center of the Antinomist Struggle (1556-1571) was the question of the function, meaning and use of the law and the gospel for the life of the Christians. In particular, was The question of whether man, after his conversion, needs a special instruction on God's life through the law. The discussion was triggered by the farewell of the Synod of the Synod of 1556, which raised the concern for the right-hand relationship between the law and the gospel. Various aspects of this problem were debated particularly intensively at different places in the Reich, with the conceptions partly very variable. The districts of the community, through the persistent theological disputes, sought to counteract the danger of divisions within the communes through the continuing theological disputes, partly through mediation, and partly through coercive measures, so that the preachers were often dismissed.
