Das Buch geht zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen uber bislang fur die Achtundvierziger/Forty Eighters vorherrschende Deutungen in dreifacher Weise hinaus: Erstens erfasst es ihre Leben als Migrationsbiografien und erklart Selbstverstandnis und Handlungskompetenz der Agierenden aus der Erfahrung von transatlantischer Mobilitat. Zweitens analysiert es die vielfaltigen Herausforderungen und Mobilitatsressourcen dieser revolutionaren Familien vor, wahrend und nach ihrer Flucht. Drittens nimmt die Studie erstmals systematisch die Revolutionarskinder in den Blick. Dadurch eroffnet sie eine Perspektive auf die Wirkungsgeschichte der Revolution, die auf innovative Weise Migrations-, Politik-, Geschlechter- und Generationengeschichte kombiniert. Insgesamt zeigt die Studie auf, dass Mobilitat, Familie und politisches Selbstverstandnis eng miteinander verknupft waren und nur in ihrem Zusammenwirken verstanden werden konnen.
