Der flamische Nationalismus stellt heute den Fortbestand des belgischen Staates infrage. Weitgehend unbekannt ist der deutsche Beitrag zu seiner Entstehung. Wahrend des Ersten Weltkriegs betrieb das wilhelminische Kaiserreich eine sogenannte Flamenpolitik. Mit der Grundung der ersten flamischen Universitat, der Teilung belgischer Ministerien in flamische und wallonische Behorden sowie der Grundung eines Rates von Flandern wurden unter deutscher Besatzung die Umrisse eines flamischen Nationalstaats geschaffen. Die Studie untersucht die Entstehung dieser importierten Nation und ihre Folgen von der Zwischenkriegszeit bis zur erneuten Besatzung Belgiens im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Sie beleuchtet damit ein wenig bekanntes Kapitel deutsch-belgischer Geschichte und wirft daruber hinaus die Frage nach der Bedeutung externer Akteure fur die Entstehung nationaler Bewegungen auf.
