Description

In March 1925, the 21-year-old Dr. Theodor Wiesengrund moves to Vienna for a few months to continue his compositional training with Alban Berg. This makes him known with the Vienna String Quartet and his 28-year-old Primarius Rudolf Kolisch, one of the most important interpreters of the New Music of the Schönberg School. Adorno and Kolisch quickly become friends and begin an extensive correspondence in which they discuss intensively on musical themes - composition, analysis, reproduction - not least about the common (but never realized) project of a »theory of musical performance«. But private is also discussed in detail. Carefully edited, extensively commented and supplemented by a rich material part with some previously unpublished texts and documents, this letter exchange is now fully available for the first time. It provides insight into a relationship that is of unique importance to the history and performance theory of 20th century New Music, but which also reflects the timings and their dislocations. A correspondence that is of outstanding relevance not only for musicological research. »Your decision to compose again, I congratulate you warmly. Thank God that you leave from the almost already fixed idea of habilitation and that you are not reaching the reference." Colisch an Adorno, 1928 "If one in the world understands me even in these most extreme layers, then you are it." Adorno an Colic, 1969
