Ein mikrogeschichtlicher Ansatz untersucht, wie die dort beschaftigten Handwerker Wissen erwarben und weitergaben. Zehntausende Briefwechsel zwischen dem Beschaffungsdepartment des Office of Ordnance und der Pulvermuhle dienen als Quellen, die durch ihre Quantitat und Detailfulle den Berufsalltag in der Pulvermuhle minutios beleuchten. Die Auswertung zeigt, dass die Handwerker eine storungsarme Produktion sicherstellten, auf die sie selbstbewusst und eigenstandig Einfluss nahmen. Dank ihrer exzellenten Arbeit erzielten sie sozialen Aufstieg, wahrend ihre Vorgesetzten gezielt die Vermittlung und Weitergabe von Wissen forderten. Die Untersuchung tragt somit zur historischen Erforschung von Arbeitspraktiken im Ubergang von der fruhneuzeitlichen Manufaktur zur industriellen Revolution bei. Ausgezeichnet mit dem zweiten Platz des Forderpreises fur Militargeschichte und Militartechnikgeschichte des Bundesamtes fur Ausrustung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr.
