Dieser Terminus deutet auf die vielfaltigen Wechselbeziehungen zwischen Territorium und Universitat hin. Gleichwohl entzieht sich der Begriff einer einheitlichen Definition, kommt doch die Forschung zu unterschiedlichen Einschatzungen uber den Charakter einer Hochschule als Landesuniversitat'. Diachron und komparativ ausgerichtete Studien versprechen daher weiteren Erkenntnisgewinn. An diesem Punkt setzen die Beitrage des vorliegenden Bandes sowohl in thematischer als auch methodischer Sicht an. Die Aufsatze widmen sich den Motiven furstlicher Universitatsgrunder und ihrem Agieren an der papstlichen Kurie, dem Zusammenhang von Landesuniversitat' und landstandischer Vertretung, Landessteuerwesen und Landesteilung, der Funktion von Hochschulen als Ausbildungsstatte fur landesherrliche Amtleute sowie der Frage der Finanzierung. Dabei werden der zeitliche und der raumliche Rahmen weit gefasst, sodass die Universitatsgeschichte des Reiches auch in ihren europaischen Verflechtungen fassbar wird.
