Wie ist es moglich, in einem spatantik-christlichen Umfeld ein Geschichtswerk uber aktuelles Zeitgeschehen zu schreiben, das sich in seiner Gestaltung an der klassischen Geschichtsschreibung Herodots und Thukydides' orientiert? Diese Frage stellt sich immer wieder bei der Lekture einer der wichtigsten Quellen zur Geschichte der Spatantike, der Kriegsgeschichte des Prokopios von Kaisareia. Anhand einer Untersuchung zu den Exkursen in Prokops Hauptwerk zeigt Albrecht Ziebuhr, wie es dem spatantiken Historiker gelingt, im Rahmen klassizistischer Profangeschichte die Vorgaben der von den Rhetorenschulen vermittelten klassischen literarischen Tradition mit den inhaltlichen Notwendigkeiten einer Schilderung spatantiker Gegebenheiten in Einklang zu bringen. Seine Untersuchungen zur Funktion der Exkurse in Prokops Kriegsgeschichte, seine Vergleiche mit klassischen Vorbildern und seine Einordnungen ihrer Inhalte in den kulturellen Kontext der christlichen Spatantike machen deutlich, dass sowohl das Ausmass der Integration christlicher Elemente als auch die Bedeutung Herodots als Vorbild fur Prokops Geschichtsschreibung hoher zu veranschlagen sind, als es von der bisherigen Forschung angenommen wurde.
