Solch einseitige Erklarungen sind nicht sinnvoll. Stephan F. Ebert zeigt an sechs Beispielen aus dem Frankenreich, dass Hungersnote, Seuchen und Todesfalle in der Zeit vom 8. bis 10. Jahrhundert haufig erst durch eine Kombination aus naturlichen und menschengemachten Faktoren eintraten. Nicht selten war der Mensch sogar massgeblich an der Entstehung extremer Ereignisse beteiligt. Eberts innovativer, interdisziplinarer Ansatz aus Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften berucksichtigt soziale Faktoren starker als bisher und macht so entscheidende Akteure bei der Erarbeitung von Bewaltigungsmassnahmen greifbar. In der gegenwartigen Diskussion uber den Klimawandel und der Frage, wie die globale Gemeinschaft den prognostizierten okologischen Herausforderungen begegnen soll, konnen diese Erkenntnisse ein historisches Orientierungswissen bereitstellen.
