Die Tätigkeit der Rotkreuzschwestern in den Sanitätseinheiten der Wehrmacht, bei den Flugbereitschaften, in Lazarettzügen und auf den Sanitätsschiffen wird in diesem Band erstmals umfassend untersucht. Der Band analysiert ihre Erfahrungen, ihre Gefährdung, ihre Gefangenschaft auf allen Schlachtfeldern anhand der Vorgangsakten und ihrer schriftlichen Äußerungen. Es waren Männer, die Ärzte der Wehrmacht, die diese Frauen einsetzten. Hinsichtlich der Geschlechterrollen bedeutete die Arbeit der Schwestern mit Ärzten und Sanitätern eine Herausforderung für alle Beteiligten. Viele Schwestern emanzipierten sich angesichts großen Personalmangels und der Übernahme verantwortungsvoller Arbeitsaufgaben. Die Ideale des Internationalen Roten Kreuzes in Genf und die Ideale der Frauen unter dem Deutschen Roten Kreuz und unter dem Hakenkreuz fielen bei weitem nicht immer zusammen. Der humanitäre Einsatz der Schwestern im Vernichtungskrieg galt nur den deutschen Soldaten und muss auch als effiziente Hilfestellung zur Verlängerung der Kampfhandlungen bis 1945 betrachtet werden.
