Wie keine zweite Organisation repräsentierte die SS die Struktur und den verbrecherischen Charakter des Nationalsozialismus. Das vorliegende Buch führt auf der Basis des aktuellen Forschungsstandes erstmals zahlreiche neue Facetten der Geschichte der SS zusammen. Wie in einem Brennglas gebündelt, schlugen sich seit 1933 wesentliche Entwicklungen der SS im ostwestfälischen Wewelsburg in der Nähe Paderborns nieder. Heinrich Himmler, der Reichsführer-SS, ließ das dortige Renaissanceschloss zu einem Zentrum seiner Organisation ausbauen. Hier, in der Mitte des Deutschen Reiches, sollten ein Versammlungsort und eine Stätte der Selbstvergewisserung für die Führungsspitze der SS, die SS-Gruppenführer, entstehen. Himmler entwickelte dafür gigantische Pläne. 1934 begann ihre Umsetzung in die Tat. Eigens für diesen Zweck ließ er in Wewelsburg das Konzentrationslager Niederhagen errichten. Namhafte Autorinnen und Autoren wie Michael Wildt, Armin Nolzen, Ruth Bettina Birn, Christian Jansen, Jens-Christian Wagner oder Karola Fings bieten Überblicksdarstellungen zu ausgewählten Aspekten der Entwicklung der SS. Die Beiträge des Buches verschränken die Geschichte der Wewelsburg und des Konzentrationslagers Niederhagen mit der Gesamtgeschichte der SS. So entsteht ein Panorama, das Struktur und Radikalisierung der SS, Ideologie und Terror, Hybris und Realität ebenso umfasst wie Kontinuitäten, die seit 1945 bis in die Gegenwart fortwirken.
