Das Gedenken an die japanischen Gefallenen des Asiatisch-Pazifischen Krieges ist eines der umstrittensten Themen in den internationalen Beziehungen des fernen Ostens. Die Gefallenen besänftigen und ihre Taten rühmen analysiert die Geschichte des politischen Totenkultes in Japan seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts und fragt, worin die wichtigsten Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der japanischen Praxis des Umgangs mit und der Erinnerung an die Kriegstoten im Vergleich zu westlichen Ländern bestehen. Dabei werden die verschiedenen Trägergruppen und unterschiedliche Formen der Erinnerung wie Friedhöfe, Denkmäler oder Schreine in den Blick genommen. Damit liefert es sowohl einen Beitrag zur vergleichenden Geschichte der Nationalstaatsbildung als auch zum Verständnis der historischen Verankerung eines hochaktuellen Problems. Review Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass die japanische Entwicklung keine bloße "nachholende Übernahme" des westlichen Modells ist, sondern dass in Abhängigkeit von Traditionsbeständen und der jeweiligen politischen Verfasstheit das globale Phänomen des politischen Totenkults eine spezifische Ausformung erhält und, ein wichtiger Punkt, wo und wie sich das konkret vollzieht. Damit liefert die Arbeit nicht nur neue Erkenntnisse zu einem Kernbereich der modernen japanischen Nationalstaatsbildung, sondern bietet viele Anknüpfungspunkte für eine vergleichende Betrachtung in diesem Feld. Eine wertvolle Ergänzung bilden die vielen Bilder spezifischer Erinnerungsorte, die Übersetzungen mehrerer wichtiger Quellen und ein umfangreiches Glossar japanischer Begriffe.
