Die Ermordung von psychisch kranken Menschen gehört zu den grauenhaften Kapiteln in der Geschichte des Nationalsozialismus. Allein aus Bayern wurden 20 000 psychisch kranke Menschen ermordet oder starben den qualvollen, bewußt herbeigeführten Hungertod. Über lange Jahrzehnte wurden diese Verbrechen verschwiegen und verdrängt. Erst seitdem sich die Psychiatrie in einem grundlegenden Reformprozeß befindet, wird versucht, die dunklen Kapitel der Psychiatriegeschichte aufzuarbeiten. Mitarbeiter der bayerischen Bezirkskrankenhäuser haben eine - in Deutschland bislang einzigartige - Dokumentation über die Ereignisse in den bayerischen Psychiatrischen Anstalten während der Jahre 1933 bis 1945 vorgelegt. Die Ergebnisse dieser jahrelangen Untersuchungen belegen detailliert, wie die bayerischen Anstalten vielfältig in die Vernichtungspolitik gegen psychisch kranke Menschen verstrickt waren. Bislang unzugängliche Dokumente zeigen in erschütternder Weise, wie verzweifelt und hilflos Betroffene und Angehörige reagierten.
