Mit Willy Brandt und Georges Pompidou nimmt Claudia Hiepel zwei politische Akteure in den Blick, die im Kontext einer Umbruchphase in der Geschichte der Europäischen Gemeinschaft in den Jahren um 1970 agierten. In bilateralen Verhandlungen fanden die Protagonisten - trotz unterschiedlicher Prägungen und Konzeptionen - Auswege aus der Krise der Europäischen Gemeinschaft. Es gelang Ihnen, eine institutionelle Weiterentwicklung anzustoßen, deren Wirkung bis in die Gegenwart hinein reicht. Die Arbeit von Claudia Hiepel wurde mit dem Emile und Aline Mayrisch-Preis und dem Willy-Brandt-Preis 2011 zur Förderung von Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und -wissenschaftlern der Bundeskanzler-Willy-Brandt-Stiftung (Berlin) ausgezeichnet.
