Die Phase des militärischen Zusammenbruchs des Dritten Reichs zwischen Sommer 1944 und Frühjahr 1945 ist historisch einmalig. Die Kriegführung der Wehrmacht entbehrte längst der rationalen politisch-strategischen Sinngebung und führte ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste an Menschenleben und Zerstörungen zielstrebig in den nationalstaatlichen Untergang. Vor diesem Hintergrund untersucht Andreas Kunz, wie groß der Einfluss der Wehrmachtsführung auf den Kurs des NS-Regimes vor Kriegsende noch war, ob diesem noch rationale Konzepte zugrunde lagen und warum die Wehrmacht in einer offenkundig aussichtslosen Situation weiterkämpfte. Er fragt nach der Totalität des Endkampfes und den Folgen des mehrjährigen Abnutzungskrieges auf das Gefüge und die Leistungsfähigkeit der militärischen Organisation. Thema ist aber auch, wie die Soldaten selbst den Zusammenbruch erlebten. Review Die Darstellung der Wehrmacht in der Endphase des Zweiten Weltkrieges ist für das Verständnis des Jahres 1945 ein zentrales Thema. Bislang lag dazu kein umfassendes Werk vor, das alle Betrachtungsebenen berücksichtigte. Und dies mit gutem Grund: Zum einen ist die Quellenlage außerordentlich problematisch. Zum anderen löste sich die Struktur der Wehrmacht seit Herbst 1944 immer mehr auf, so daß sie als Untersuchungsgegenstand nur noch schwer handhabbar ist. Andreas Kunz hat diese Herausforderungen gleichwohl bravourös gemeistert: Er verdeutlicht, wie die geschlagene Armee bei den Endkämpfen um das Deutsche Reich in organisatorischer, materieller, personeller und operativ-taktischer Hinsicht derart ihre Gestalt veränderte, daß von den Konturen des einstigen Gebildes bald nichts mehr zu erkennen war.
