Als Fallstudie für osteuropäische Peripherienationen thematisiert dieses Buch die weißrussische Geschichtsschreibung und Geschichtskultur in deren Wechselbeziehungen zur politischen Herrschaft. Der Untersuchungszeitraum reicht vom ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart - von der Entstehungszeit einer weißrussischen Nationalidee über die zwanziger und dreißiger Jahre unter Stalin, das Jahrzehnt zwischen Weltkrieg und Tauwetter bis zur spät- und postsowjetischen Zeit. Wie am Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts stehen sich im heutigen Weißrußland nationale Mythenbildung und russophil-imperiale Geschichtsbilder gegenüber. Die Untersuchung zeigt auch, wie die Geschichtspolitik des ersten weißrussischen Präsidenten in den neunziger Jahren einer Nationsbildung der Weißrussen entgegensteht.
