Die wechselnden historischen Herrschaftsverhältnisse haben eine weißrussische Nationsbildung immer wieder unterbrochen. Als Fallstudie für osteuropäische Peripherienationen thematisiert dieses Buch die weißrussische Geschichtsschreibung und Geschichtskultur in deren Wechselbeziehungen zur politischen Herrschaft. Der Untersuchungszeitraum reicht vom ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart - von der Entstehungszeit einer weißrussischen Nationalidee über die zwanziger und dreißiger Jahre unter Stalin, das Jahrzehnt zwischen Weltkrieg und Tauwetter bis zur spät- und postsowjetischen Zeit. Wie am Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts stehen sich im heutigen Weißrußland nationale Mythenbildung und russophil-imperiale Geschichtsbilder gegenüber. Die Untersuchung zeigt auch, wie die Geschichtspolitik des ersten weißrussischen Präsidenten in den neunziger Jahren einer Nationsbildung der Weißrussen entgegensteht.
