Ab wann kann man von einer deutschen Nation sprechen? Lange Zeit haben die Historiker den Beginn der Nation weit in die Geschichte zurückverlegt. Dann wurde dies als ideologische Konstruktion "entlarvt", und alle waren der Überzeugung, daß die moderne deutsche Nation im Umkreis der Französischen Revolution beginnt. In den letzten Jahren ist dieser Konsens wieder brüchig geworden. Dazu haben neue theoretische Ansätze in der Nationalismus-forschung (Ethnonationalismus) ebenso beigetragen wie neue Forschungen zur Geschichte des Alten Reichs. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes bündeln die Diskussion, so daß für zentrale Untersuchungsbereiche die Frage nach Kontinuität und Wandel neu gestellt werden kann.
