Diese Buch ist die erste umfassende Darstellung einer großen Naturkatastrophe in Deutschland in der Frühen Neuzeit. Im Mittelpunkt steht nicht die Beschreibung der Katastrophe und der durch sie verursachten Schäden, obwohl auch dieses geschieht, sondern die Frage, wie die betroffenen Länder, die staatlichen Organe ebenso wie die einzelnen Menschen diese Katastrophe mit ihren wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Folgen bewältigten.
