Le «DAO» est le premier dictionnaire onomasiologique de l'ancien occitan. Il suit un classement par concepts (d'après le système conceptuel de Hallig-Wartburg) du lexique de la France méridionale sur la base de textes s'étalant des premiers documents jusqu'au milieu du 16e siècle. Il réunit de manière systématique, tant sur le plan lexical que morphologique, les moyens d'expression de l'ancien occitan correspondant à une notion donnée. Clé onomasiologique des deux grands dictionnaires de Raynouard et de Levy, il complètera ces derniers par un grand nombre de références nouvelles acquises dans le cadre de recherches plus récentes. Cette approche onomasiologique, par la relation établie entre «les mots et les choses», considère et intègre davantage la langue non-littéraire jusqu'ici quelque peu négligée. Le «DAO» est le premier dictionnaire qui tient compte de tous les idiomes du Midi de la France: en relevant la scripta occitane/gasconne, le latin médiéval et le français régional, il reflète intégralement la situation linguistique plurilingue qui régnait au Moyen âge dans le domaine occitan. Der «DAO» ist das erste nach Sachgruppen geordnete Wörterbuch der altokzitanischen Sprache von den Anfängen ihrer Schriftlichkeit bis zur Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts. Er bildet den onomasiologischen Schlüssel zu den beiden großen altokzitanischen Wörterbüchern von Raynouard und Levy, deren Wortschatz durch die Erschließung neuen Quellenmaterials in umfangreichem Maße ergänzt und aktualisiert wird. Er zielt auf die Wiedergabe des gesamten Sprachsystems einer Epoche ab: unter Berücksichtigung der mehrsprachigen Situation Südfrankreichs erfasst der «DAO» zusätzlich die mittellateinischen und regionalfranzösischen Idiome und bietet somit die vollständigste verfügbare Information zur gesamten linguistischen Situation im mittelalterlichen Südfrankreich. DAO, Fascicule 10, page 764) Après les fascicules DAO 10 et DAOSuppl 10, la part consacrée à l'ancien occitan sera abandonnée au profit d'une concentration sur le point fort de l'entreprise, le DAG (voir http: //www.degruyter.com/view/serial/35571). Poursuivre deux objectifs à la fois, l'objectif occitan général et l'objectif gascon, impliquait une progression par trop lente sur chacun des domaines. Un changement d'orientation vers l'ancien gascon, d'ailleurs fidèle à l'esprit et à la genèse du DAO/DAG (Kurt Baldinger a conçu l'entreprise comme un dictionnaire de l'ancien gascon), apparaît comme une tâche plus actuelle que jamais. Un projet resserré, doté de l'objectif de décrire l'ancien gascon en lui-même, et progressant plus vite, contribuera à réaliser un produit cohérent et maîtrisable qui apportera, par ses dépouillements étendus de sources primaires, un grand nombre de faits nouveaux significatifs. Sous la perspective onomasiologique, retenue depuis le début pas le projet, le DAG nouvelle formule à partir du domaine A IV b «Les oiseaux», continuera à donner une version d'ensemble organique des moyens d'expression lexicaux de la langue des chartes médiévales gasconnes.
