Ausgehend von systemtheoretischen Grundannahmen wirft der Verfasser einen neuen, sozialhistorisch akzentuierten Blick auf die Gattungsgeschichte der literarischen Idylle im 18. Jahrhundert. Es ergibt sich eine Neuanordnung der Quellen, die einen Bruch in der Entwicklung der Gattung statt mit der empfindsamen Idyllik Geßners erst mit den auf ihn folgenden kritischen Auseinandersetzungen mit seinem Werk konstatiert. Leben und Werk Geßners werden hingegen einer als "komplementär" ausgewiesenen Tradition sozialer Theorie zugeordnet, die eingangs aus den Grundlagenschriften des säkularen Naturrechts hergeleitet wird: Die "kleinen Gesellschaften" emotional verbundener Gruppen wurden hier in die Theorien der "großen Gesellschaft" integriert, die auf die selbstbezüglichen Neigungen und Interessen der einzelnen zurückgriffen. Dies ging einher mit einem beschränkten Geltungsanspruch "schöner Literatur", in der sich das Ideal harmonischer Geselligkeit Ausdruck verschaffte. Sobald dieser beschränkte Geltungsanspruch in Frage gestellt und schließlich offen abgelehnt wurde, mußte sich daher auch der soziale Status des Idyllischen einschneidend verändern. Der Verfasser verfolgt diese Veränderungen anhand zentraler Autoren der Idyllentheorie von Geßner bis Goethe und greift ausführlich auf deren sozialtheoretischen Kontext zurück, wobei auch bislang wenig beachtete Texte, etwa die Einsamkeitsschriften J. G. Zimmermanns und J. H. Obereits, einer ausgiebigen Betrachtung unterzogen werden.
