Es sollte die Krönung seiner wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn bilden - und blieb doch über Jahrhunderte fast unbeachtet: Mit dem vorliegenden Band wird das altertumskundliche Hauptwerk von Karl Philipp Moritz, »Anthusa oder Roms Alterthümer« (1791), erstmals in einer philologisch zuverlässigen und sorgfältig kommentierten Ausgabe vorgelegt. Der Kommentar zeigt die komplexe Textstruktur unter dem schlichten Erzählton auf und analysiert Moritz' Darstellungstechnik der Verschränkung und Potenzierung heterogenen Quellenmaterials, die dem Werk den Charakter eines literarischen Experiments gibt. Auf der anderen Seite tritt der Autor in bisher ungeahntem Maße als Teilhaber der Überlieferung und Erbe der abendländischen Tradition in den Blick. In das Werk über die römischen Altertümer sind - vielfach lateinische - Quellen aus zwei Jahrtausenden eingegangen, von antiken Klassikern über Kompendien der humanistischen Gelehrsamkeit bis zu Auszügen aus Goethe und Kant: Das verbreitete Moritz-Bild vom spontan-voraussetzungslosen Einzelgänger erhält durch diesen Befund eine wichtige Ergänzung. Als Teil eines ursprünglich größer angelegten Werkkomplexes handelt »Anthusa« von den Festen und Riten der römischen Religion. In ihrer Interpretation hat Moritz den Weg von einer inhaltsfixierten, durch christliche Polemik geprägten Sichtweise zu einer stärker "strukturalistischen" Deutung gebahnt. Nach den Kategorien der von ihm entwickelten Ästhetik erschließt er die Äußerungen antiker Religiosität als Entsprechungen des Kunstschönen und damit auf eine Weise, die dem ausgeprägten Formalismus dieser Religion entspricht.
