In seinen ersten Leipziger Amtsjahren komponierte Johann Sebastian Bach fast wöchentlich eine neue Kantate. Auf diese Weise entstand ein Werkfundus, auf den Bach in den folgenden Jahren zurückgreifen konnte. Denn der Komponist hatte jeden Sonntag eine Kantate aufzuführen und konnte diese Anforderung nur erfüllen, indem er seine früheren bewährten Werke erneut verwendete und sie zugleich veränderte oder erweiterte. Das gilt in gleichem Maß für Bachs Johannes- und Matthäus-Passion, die ebenfalls in mehreren Fassungen erhalten sind. – Um Bachs Verfahren verständlich zu machen, benutzt Friedhelm Krummacher in seinem Buch einen neuen Ansatz: Er verbindet die chronologische Folge der Werke mit ihrer systematischen Gruppierung nach Besetzungen und Satzarten.
