Jacobus de Voragine (um 1228-1298), Dominikaner, Erzbischof von Genua, Autor zahlreicher Predigten und einer Geschichte der Stadt Genua, ist als Kompilator der verbreitetsten Legendensammlung des Mittelalters, der "Legenda aurea" (Goldene Legende), bekannt geworden, die er (unter Mithilfe eines Redaktionsteams) aus Hunderten von Schriftquellen zusammengestellt hat. Das Werk ist nicht nur als Materialsammlung fur die mittelalterliche Kunstgeschichte bedeutsam, sondern gewahrt wesentliche Einblicke in Theologie, Liturgie und Volksfrommigkeit seiner Zeit sowie in die Auseinandersetzungen mit den als Haretikern bekampften Katharern. Der Text der Originalausgabe (2014) wurde fur die Sonderausgabe durchgesehen; sie enthalt: den kritisch aufgearbeiteten lateinischen Text, der auf der erstmaligen Kollation der beiden wichtigsten fruhen Handschriften beruht, eine Einfuhrung mit dem Uberblick uber die neuere Forschung, eine neue deutsche Ubersetzung, einen ausfuhrlichen Kommentar mit Quellennachweisen. Die Original- und die Sonderausgabe sind identisch paginiert, also nebeneinander benutzbar.
