Vlad Tepes ("der Pfahler") Dracula ist nicht nur deshalb eine streitbare Figur, weil der Furst der Walachei (1448, 1456-1462, 1476) als Vorbild fur Bram Stokers Vampirgrafen (1897) herhalten musste, der in der Literaturwissenschaft eine immense Resonanz hervorgerufen hat. In historischer Perspektive ist der Woiwode (slaw. "Heerfuhrer") deshalb von Interesse, weil er nach der Eroberung Konstantinopels 1453 durch die Osmanen Papst Pius' Kreuzzugsaufruf folgte. Auffallig waren sowohl seine autoritaren Versuche, fur innenpolitische Ordnung zu sorgen, als auch sein Bestreben, seinem Land den Nimbus einer "Vormauer des Christentums" zu verschaffen. Aufgrund dieser historiografischen bzw. erinnerungskulturellen Bedeutung entsteht der Eindruck, seine Herrschaftszeit sei umfassend untersucht worden. Tatsachlich aber ist der Kenntnisstand in weiten Teilen noch in der Zwischenkriegszeit respektive im Nationalkommunismus verankert und von einem rumanischen Patriotismus gepragt. Unter diesen Voraussetzungen wird das Bild des walachischen Woiwoden heute noch von der Ambivalenz zweier an und fur sich gegensatzlicher Ansatze bestimmt: einem nationalistischen in Rumanien und einem auf das Vampirgenre rekurrierenden im Westen. Angeregt durch diesen Befund wurde vom 25.-27. September 2014 an der Justus-Liebig-Universitat Gieaen eine internationale Konferenz zum Thema "Vlad Dracula--Tyrann oder Volkstribun" veranstaltet, deren Ergebnisse dieser Band vereint. Im Fokus der Untersuchungen stehen neben der Vita des "Pfahlers" seine diplomatischen Strategien im Umgang mit Kontrahenten und Verbundeten sowie die Rezeption und Mythenbildung seiner Person.
