Uber Jahrhunderte versuchten die Ukrainer ihren Weg als eigenstandige Nation zu bestreiten. Sie lernten, ihre Bedurfnisse zuruckzustellen und sich verschiedenen Machthabern, ob im 18. Jahrhundert dem Zarenreich und der Habsburger Monarchie oder im 19. Jahrhundert Polen, Rumanien, der Tschechoslowakei und Sowjetrussland unterzuordnen. Lediglich im Jahr 1918 gelang es der Ukraine, zeitweilig ein eigenes Staatswesen zu etablieren. Unter Stalin herrschte in der Ukraine als Teil der Sowjetunion eine Zeit des Terrors. Millionen Menschen fielen der Hungersnot sowie den groaen Sauberungen zum Opfer. Auch nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg besserte sich die Lage der Ukrainer nicht. Letztendlich war es den Ukrainern am 24. August 1991 vergonnt die Unabhangigkeit der Ukraine zu verkunden. Mit der Orangenen Revolution 2004 und der Majdan-Revolution 2013 zeigten die Ukrainer, dass nicht mehr die postsowjetischen Eliten, sondern die Burger selbst den Wandel bringen sollten. Das Land durfte sich aber nicht in Ruhe entwickeln, da russische Streitkrafte die Krim annektierten und in der Ostukraine fur Unruhen sorgten.
