Kurfurst Joachim II. (1505-1571) ist die pragende Herrscherfigur Brandenburgs im Zeitalter von Renaissance und Reformation. Er war es auch, der die Mark Brandenburg 1539/40 offiziell fur Luthers Lehre offnete. Dennoch blieb eine moderne wissenschaftliche Biografie Joachims II. bis in die Gegenwart hinein Desiderat. Das vorliegende Buch nimmt nun erstmals die gesamte Lebens- und Herrschaftszeit dieses Kurfursten umfassend in den Blick. Dabei wird nicht nur die Rolle des Kurfursten als Vermittler zwischen den religionspolitischen Lagern neu ausgeleuchtet, sondern auch die Rolle des aktiven Renaissance-Herrschers untersucht, der im Sinne der Herrschaftsreprasentation auch Kunst und Kultur zu nutzen wusste. Neben einer vermittelnden Religionspolitik war es namentlich die ausgesprochen ambitionierte Hausmachtpolitik, die immer wieder auch Misstrauen gegen den Kurfursten schurte. Auf breiter Quellenbasis wird so ein Herrscherleben nachgezeichnet, das Licht, aber auch Schatten kannte.
