Die von Raffael entworfenen und von Giulio Romano ausgeführten Wandmalereien der Schlacht an der Milvischen Brücke und der Kreuzesvision in der nach dem Freskenzyklus benannten Sala di Costantino im Vatikan gelten in der Forschung als Ergebnis des intensiven Studiums antiker Sachverhalte im Raffaelkreis und des Bemühens um eine historisch korrekte Annäherung an die antike Kunst. Doch Raffael wurde bereits von Giorgio Vasari, Ludovico Dolce und Annibale Carracci nicht nur aufgrund seiner antiquarischen Kompetenz, sondern auch wegen seiner poetischen Qualitäten als herausragender Historienmaler gewürdigt. Ausgehend von der Formel anticamente moderno e modernamente antico, mit der Pietro Aretino Giulio Romanos ideale Synthese von antiker und zeitgenössischer Kunst beschreibt, analysiert Michail Chatzidakis den Unterschied zwischen historischen und dichterischen Darstellungsverfahren, um so das Verhältnis zwischen archäologischer Präzision und poetischer Kreativität bei Raffael und seinem Umkreis in der Sala di Costantino genauer zu bestimmen.
