Description
Der Südtiroler Maler und Bildschnitzer Michael Pacher (ca. 1435–1498) nimmt eine besondere Rolle in der Geschichte der europäischen Kunst ein. Einerseits gelten seine großen Flügelaltäre – wie jener von Sankt Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee in Oberösterreich – als Glanzleistungen der Spätgotik, andererseits darf Pacher als einer der ersten Renaissancekünstler des Nordens gelten. Bei einem frühen Aufenthalt in Padua lernte er die Werke von Mantegna, Donatello, Uccello und Lippi kennen. Wie kein anderer Künstler außerhalb Italiens machte er sich die neuen Konzepte des zentralperspektivischen Bildes zu eigen. Die Spannung zwischen den geographischen und stilistischen Polen macht den Reiz seiner Werke aus, warf aber auch Probleme auf, denen der Künstler mit erstaunlich innovativen Lösungen begegnete. Der Band stellt das Gesamtwerk Michael Pachers in Wort und Bild vor und zieht eine Summe der bisherigen Forschung. Anhand von Werkanalysen wird auch versucht, dem intellektuellen Profil dieses Künstlers auf der Schwelle zur Neuzeit auf die Spur zu kommen.
