But the spatial turn that makes us rethink history in its spatial dimension, encourages us to re-examine the perception of urban and peri-urban spaces. The exploration of these spaces is at the heart of this volume, particularly concerned with the evolution of their cartographic representation, the social topography, the processes of inclusion or exclusion and the gradation of the zones of urban influences. The contributions highlight selected cities from Central, Southern and Eastern Europe, including fortress cities and the "little towns", which are often overlooked in this context.
