Burgen waren fur die Nationalsozialisten Symbole wehrhaften Germanentums und deutschen Eroberungswillens. NS-Politiker richteten Erziehungsstatten in den mittelalterlichen Wehrbauten ein, nutzten sie als Tagungsorte und priesen sie als Touristenzentren der deutschen Volksgemeinschaft. Diese ideologische Vereinnahmung ist nicht denkbar ohne die Mithilfe derer, die am besten uber diese Mittelalterbauten Bescheid wussten, die Burgenforscher und Burgenexperten. Willentlich stellten sie ihre Dienste dem NS-Regime zur Verfugung und profitierten von den vielfaltigen Forderungen durch NS-Politiker. Doch die verstarkte Unterstutzung von Burgenforschung und Burgendenkmalpflege im Nationalsozialismus fuhrte, anders als bei den Boom-Fachern Prahistorie oder Volkskunde, zu keiner disziplinaren Verfestigung. Weder vor 1933 noch nach 1945 war die Burgenforschung ein institutionalisiertes Fach. Das Buch zeigt die Mechanismen auf, die zu dieser Entwicklung fuhrten.
