There are 100 formative years, from Peter Behrens to Günter Behnisch, from the peoples battle monument and Faguswerk to the Stalinallee and the new Bundestag - 100 years in which Germany's urban planning image develops. For the first time, architecture and urban planning are presented in the context of social, economic and technical developments. The focus of this history of architecture in Germany is on the period 1890 to 1990 - from the Empire to the Reunification. The upheavals in 1918/19, 1933 and 1945 each change the external framework, from 1945 the construction splits into the occupation zones and after the foundation of FRG and GDR in 1949, the developments in East and West are determined by competition and convergence. With political unification, the various architectural strands reconnect, the year 1990 therefore forms an important caesura. An outlook on the period after 1990 concludes this multifaceted social, economic, institutional and technical history of architecture.
