Fontane's theatre reviews - fully edited and commented for the first time. From 1870 to the end of 1889, Fontane was active as a theatre speaker for the »Vossische Zeitung« and has written about 650 reviews during this time. These texts are first fully published as part of the Great Brandenburg Edition. They contour the image of the journalist Fontane, whose contributions constitute an essential facet of his writing creation. Particularly impressive is the modernity of his views and texts, in which the development from Wilhelminian to naturalistic theatre is distinguished. When he pursues the performances of the first stage of Berlin for the liberal »Vossische Zeitung« in the Royal Schauspielhaus am Gendarmenmarkt, he wants to entertain his readers above all: with word play and wit, he evaluates in his characteristic chat tone piece, subject and actor. He does not follow a "paragraph code", but always trusts his "immediate sensation" and his own point of view.
