Die Vereinigung der beiden deutschen Staaten hat innergesellschaftliche Auswir kungen, die weit in das nächste Jahrzehnt hinein reichen und im Bildungssyste- beispielsweise mit Blick auf das Personal - mindestens eine Generationsspanne umfassen dürften. Dies macht es über ein allgemein-historisches Interesse an den politisch-gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen im Nachkriegsdeutschland hinaus sinn voll, sich mit der Ausgangssituation und mit den Bedingungen und Prozessen der Veränderungen auseinanderzusetzen, die im Zusammenhang mit der staatlichen Einheit und ihren gesellschaftlichen Folgen stehen. Um Entscheidungen, Ent wicklungen und Prozesse verstehen und einzuordnen zu können, ist es erforderlich, sich mit ihren Bedingungen, aber auch mit der Ausgangslage, den Vorgängen und mit den Interessen der beteiligten Akteure vertraut zu machen. Es gibt mehrere Gründe dafür, daß das sozialistische Bildungssystem der DDR zu jenen Bereiehen gehörte, auf die sich viele der Reformforderungen der Protest bewegung, der Oppositionsgruppen und Bürgerinitiativen bezogen. Bildungsfragen berühren grundsätzlich jeden Bürger. Bildungssysteme sind Verteilungsstellen für Lebenschancen, sie haben mit unterschiedlichen Menschenbildern zu tun und nehmen Einfluß auf die Entfaltung der Persönlichkeit der Individuen. Als Repro duktionsinstanzen prägen sie die Stellung der Menschen in der Gesellschaft und zum Staat. Dies geschieht umso stärker, je enger die Bindung eines Bildungs systems an eine bestimmte (Alternativen ausschließende) Ideologie ist. Das Bil dungssystem der DDR war nicht erst seit dem Beginn der Wende Gegenstand mas siver Kritik, wie etwa die Aktivitäten von Gruppen innerhalb des kirchlichen Raums in den achtziger Jahren belegten.
