Als im Jahre 1983 namhafte Naturwissenschaftler in aller Welt aus Anlaß des 100. Geburtstages Leben und Werk Otto Warburgs wür digten, wurde noch einmal das Bild eines Mannes lebendig, der über sechs Jahrzehnte gleichermaßen als Zeilphysiologe, Bioche miker, Photobiologe und Mediziner Wissenschaftsgeschichte ge schrieben hatte. Es wird wohl kaum einen zweiten Biowissenschaftler unseres Jahrhunderts geben, der so mit Superlativen bedacht, zugleich so euphorisch gefeiert und distanziert betrachtet wurde. Die einen huldigten ihm als einem "der begabtesten und hoffnungsvollsten jüngeren Physiologen Deutschlands" (Albert Einstein, 1918), als "Meister der Zellchemie" (Dean Burk, 1953) und "Künstler der Zellphysiologie" (Josef Hausen, 1955), als einem der "großen Wegbereiter der modernen Physiologie und Biochemie" (Kurt Mothes, 1956) oder "großen Pioniere der Biologie" (Hans Krebs, 1979). Sie feierten einen "Strategen der Wissenschaft" (Lothar Jae nicke, 1980) und "König der Biochemiker" (Ernst Jokl, 1983), sa hen in ihm "den Pasteur unseres Jahrhunderts" (Theodor Bücher, 1983) und eine "singuläre Erscheinung unter den großen Natur wissenschaftlern dieses Jahrhunderts, . . . etwa einem Galilei oder einem Leibniz oder einem Faraday vergleichbar" (Manfred von Ardenne, 1986). Seine Arbeiten wurden als "Manifeste" der Stoff wechselforschung (Hermann Kalckar, 1976), "Kunstwerke" (Karl Lohmann, 1977) und "Glanzpunkte in der Entwicklung der biolo gischen Wissenschaften" (Eberhard Hofmann, 1985), sein Institut als "Palast der Zellphysiologie" (Dean Burk, 1953) und "Akropolis der Naturwissenschaften" (Spandauer Volksblatt, 1962) betrach tet.
