Die Arbeit zielt auf ein neues, sozialwissenschaftlich begründetes Verständnis von Wissenschaft und Technik. Alle diese Phasen sind von massiven technischen Innovationsschüben begleitet. Dahinter steht die Suche nach neuen Konsensformen. Wissenschaft und Technik erscheinen als Sprachtypen, die den spezifischen Kommunikationsbedürfnissen der Kulturen entsprechen. Das Buch kann genauso als eigenwillige Bedeutungsgeschichte der Universität, wie als Vorschlag zu gewinnbringender Bezugnahme zwischen Ingenieur- und Sozialwissenschaften gelesen werden.
