Ein Politiker, der zu sühnen hatte. Für den Spötter Volta;ire war der Hauptgrund von Dantes Ruhm darin gelegen, daß die Divina Commedia niemand lese. Ihm, dem Aufklärer, war der Florentiner der langweilige Finsteding. Konnte doch selbst Goethe, wie später auch Richard Wagner, in kein inneres Verhältnis zu Dante kommen. Was hätte da der Dichter einem Voltaire bedeuten sollen? So schafft sich jede Zeit und Geistesrichtung ihr eigenes Dante bild. Glücklicherweise nicht mehr nach dem Vorbild der Signoria von Florenz oder des Schutzpatrons der französischen Enzyklopädisten. Immerhin, Dantes Ingenium ist ein Gipfel, der in eigenwilligen For men hoch genug ragt, um seinen Betrachtern auf verschiedenen Seiten die verschiedensten Anblicke zu gewähren.
